Recruiting Principles

As a member institution of the National Association of College Admissions Counselors, the Admissions Office at Ohio State is committed to ethical standards in its recruitment of college prospects.

This includes following such basic tenets as not disparaging other universities, not recruiting students already committed to another institution, and acting without bias in regard to race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, political affiliation, national origin, or disabling conditions.

1.What does Ohio State look for in students?
Most students admitted to Ohio State rank in at least the top half of their high school class, with the majority ranking in the top third. We look at class rank, test scores, and the college preparatory curriculum taken during high school.

2. What's the total enrollment at Ohio State and how many students are in the freshman class?
Current enrollment on all campuses is just over 54,000. At the Columbus campus, enrollment is 48,000, which includes undergraduate and graduate students. The freshman class is close to 5,800 students.

3. Is Ohio State on quarters or semesters?
Ohio State is on the quarter system. Autumn quarter begins in late September and runs to the middle of December. Winter quarter runs from early January to mid-march. Spring quarter begins in late March and ends in mid-June. Quarters are 10 weeks long, with final exams during week 11.

4. How do I get an application for admission and for financial aid?
Applications for admissions and financial aid are sent by the admissions office to all Ohio high school guidance counselors. Out-of-state students in their senior year can request applications by contacting the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid at (614) 292-0300 or at www.osu.edu.

5. What's the average ACT/SAT score?
The middle 50 percent of this year's freshman class falls between these scores:
ACT Composite: 21 to 27
SAT: 1,000 to 1,250 verbal and math

6. When will I be notified if I'm admitted?
Within four to six weeks of sending in your application, you'll receive a response from the admissions office. For your file to be complete, they need your application, the College Preparatory Curriculum Form, an official high school transcript, and your $30 non-refundable application fee.

7. Is the fact that my high school is competitive considered?
Yes. The competitiveness of your high school is one of the nine additional factors considered during your application review. It will be used only in a positive way. The competitiveness of your school will never hurt your application.

8. What's the average class size and student-faculty ratio?
The student-faculty ratio is 14:1. If a student does have a large class, it will be a lecture and then it will be broken down into smaller classrooms or sections called recitations. This is where questions are answered and tests taken. A large lecture will always be tempered with a smaller recitation.

9. Are classes taught by TV?
Some professors use television to supplement their lectures. There are some courses in which the lectures are videotaped and made available to students for review or if they missed a class.

10. What's the average course load?
A full-time load is 12 hours. But the average full-time student may take 15-18 hours, which is 3-5 classes.

11. Is it difficult to graduate in four years?
It's certainly possible, but most students nationwide don't graduate in four years. At Ohio State, many students choose to participate in cooperative education programs, internships, and study-abroad programs, which will delay graduation beyond four years. Many students also choose to take off a quarter or two to work or to meet family obligations. At Ohio State, there's such a wide array of courses to choose from that some students stay longer than four years just to take advantage of all those opportunities.

12. Who teaches the classes, professors or graduate students?
Both professors and graduate students teach at Ohio State. Graduate teaching assistants are used primarily in introductory courses. They're required to take courses on how to teach, and since they're studying for a master's or doctorate in that particular field, they're very familiar and comfortable with the material. In many cases, they're from the top of their classes and are certainly well-qualified to teach courses.

13. Is living in a residence hall required?
All new freshmen who don't have immediate, financially supporting family in Franklin County or one of the contiguous counties are required to live in residence halls for their first year.

14. Will there be space if I want to stay in a residence hall all four years?
Students who meet all residence hall deadlines and obligations can return to the halls as upper-classmen for as long as they wish.

15. What kinds of computer facilities are available?
Computer facilities are available to students at a number of locations around campus. Each of the residence hall areas has a computer facility. Many residence halls have facilities within their building. Additionally, a number of campus classroom buildings have computer facilities for student access. Many students, however, prefer to work at their own pace, in their own environment, or at unusual hours. For those reasons some prefer to have their own personal computers.

16. Can I request whom I want to live with?
Students may request to live with a friend. Residence and Dining Halls makes every effort to honor mutual roommate requests.

17. Can I have a car on campus?
New freshmen can have a car on campus, but beware. You won't be able to park near your residence hall or drive to class. Most students meet their daily needs at Ohio State by walking or riding the campus bus. Students who frequently travel out of the city or state will obviously benefit from having a car, but most would be better off without one.

18. Can students get tickets to varsity athletic events?
Yes, all students have the opportunity to buy tickets to varsity contests.

19. Aside from varsity athletics, what other athletic opportunities are available?
Ohio State has the largest intramural program in the nation, and anyone can participate. We have everything from basketball to sailing, with more than 56,000 participants playing on 4,500 teams.

20. What's the campus like on evenings and weekends?
The campus is alive with events all week throughout the year, such as the Medieval and Renaissance Festival on the Oval, Greek Week, concerts in Ohio Stadium and at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, and activities at one of the two student unions or the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center.

21. What's the Greek system like?
Ohio State has 24 social sororities and 38 social fraternities. All support various campus events and are active in many organizations. Leadership development is one of the major components of Greek membership.

22. What kind of extracurricular activities are available?
There are more than 500 registered organizations at Ohio State. These include academic, social, recreational, religious, political, and special-interest groups. There's something for everyone.
